My Strict Mom Kicked Me Out After Finding a Pregnancy Test, but What She Heard from the Neighbors Changed Everything – Story of the Day

My strict mom kicked me out after finding a pregnancy test in my room. I packed my things, thinking it was the end of my life at home. But then, a heated argument from our neighbors revealed a shocking truth that turned everything upside down.

I think it is best to start with my childhood so you can understand how I grew up with my mom.

Anyone who said children should be treated equally would have had a heart attack if they had seen how my mom raised me and my sister.

My dad left us before I was born, and from that moment, my mom seemed to decide I had to pay for his mistakes.

She never went easy on me. I always had to be the best at everything, everywhere. If I didn’t get an A+, it felt like the end of the world.

“Theresa, is this your best?” she would ask, her voice sharp as glass.

My sister Ann, on the other hand, was born when my mom was married to Roger, my stepdad.

Ann got the soft, loving version of my mom, while I got the strict, unyielding one.

The rules never applied to Ann. She was always the perfect little princess, even when she stole money from Roger’s wallet and spent it on her lazy boyfriend.

“You know how teenagers are,” Mom would say, her tone light and forgiving.

It was like I lived in a different world, one where mistakes were met with punishment, and perfection was the only way to survive.

As a child, this injustice killed me, but the older I got, the easier it became to accept it and just move on.

Especially since I was on the verge of starting my own family. Peter was my salvation—the one who accepted me for who I was.

When he proposed to me, I felt like I could finally breathe. We recently graduated from college and decided to save money to buy a house, so we both lived with our parents.

It was hard being back under my mom’s roof, but I told myself it was temporary.

Ann also lived with Mom. She didn’t get into college, so she just worked odd jobs here and there.

But to Mom, she was still the perfect daughter she had always dreamed of.

For her 21st birthday, Ann decided to celebrate at home, inviting all her friends to save money.

Mom spent the whole day cooking in the kitchen while Ann sat on the couch glued to her phone. Of course, I was also forced to cook and decorate the house.

“Why do I have to get ready for Ann’s birthday while she just lies on the couch?” I asked, trying to keep my voice steady.

“Because you’re the older sister,” Mom said, chopping vegetables. She didn’t look at me either.

“Ann’s not a child anymore,” I said. “She can help, too.”

“Is it so hard for you to help?! You do nothing anyway!” Mom snapped, slamming the knife down.

I clenched my jaw. “Well, I only work full-time and do everything around the house,” I muttered.

“What did you say?” Mom yelled.

“Nothing,” I said.

By evening, our house was in complete chaos. People crowded every room, food covered every surface, and loud music filled the air.

Mom buzzed around Ann, catering to her every whim. Ann sat on the couch, laughing with her friends, not lifting a finger to help. I needed a break, so I slipped outside and called Peter.

“I don’t know how much more I can take,” I said, my voice shaking.

“You just need to hold on a little longer. We’ll have our own place soon,” Peter said.

“She treats me like I don’t exist,” I said. “She only remembers me when she needs something.”

“I don’t understand why she treats you and Ann so differently,” Peter said.

“Because Ann was born in marriage, and my dad ruined her life, as she likes to say,” I replied. I kicked at the gravel, small stones skittering away.

“I’m sorry, Theresa,” Peter said.

Before I could respond, Mom’s scream ripped through the house.

“THERESA!” she yelled. “THERESA, GET IN HERE!”

“I have to go. I’ll call you back,” I told Peter. I hung up and rushed inside, my heart pounding.

I found Mom standing in the middle of the living room, surrounded by guests. She held something in her hand, her face twisted in anger.

“What?” I asked.

“WHAT IS THIS?!” she shouted, thrusting a positive pregnancy test toward me.

“A test?” I said, staring at it.

“I can see it’s a test! You reckless girl!” Mom screamed.

“What? You think it’s mine?” I asked.

“Whose else would it be?!” she yelled, her eyes wide and wild.

“The house is full of people. What makes you think it’s mine?” I said. I could feel every eye in the room on me.

“Because I found it in your room!” Mom screamed.

“What were you doing in my room?!” I yelled back.

“I am your mother, and I can go into your room whenever I want!” she shouted.

“It’s not my test!” I said.

“Don’t lie! Do you think I don’t know what you and Peter have been doing?!” Mom screamed.

The music had stopped. Everyone was staring. The room felt too small, the walls closing in.

“You’re a disgrace! Getting pregnant before the wedding!” Mom yelled.

“And you’re no different! You also got pregnant out of wedlock!” I shot back.

“And I regret it every day of my life! If I could go back, I wouldn’t have given birth! I WISH I HAD NEVER GIVEN BIRTH TO YOU!” Mom screamed.

Her words hit me like a slap. She was talking about me.

“You’re a reckless woman who shamed our family! You better be gone by tomorrow!” Mom shouted.

“Fine!” I yelled. I turned and ran to my room.

As soon as I closed the door, I fell to the floor. The tears came hard, shaking me. How could a mother say such things about her child?

I knew the test wasn’t mine, and didn’t care whose it was. I couldn’t stay in that house a minute longer.

My mom’s words echoed in my head, each one sharp and painful. I grabbed my phone and texted Peter.

Can I move in with you?

His reply came fast: Of course. Come over now.

I packed my things late into the night. I didn’t take much—just clothes, my old photo album, and a few books.

Each item I touched reminded me of how unhappy I had been. When the sun started to rise, I was already at Peter’s place.

He hugged me tight, his warmth the only thing keeping me from falling apart. “She isn’t worth your tears, Theresa,” he said.

I nodded, but it didn’t help. I couldn’t shake the thought: If it had been Ann’s test, Mom would have reacted completely differently.

She would have hugged Ann and told her everything would be okay. But for me, there was only anger and rejection.

A few weeks passed since I moved out, and I felt lighter. Without Mom in my life, it was like I could finally breathe. Still, I needed to go back to get a few things I had left behind.

When I pulled up to the house, I saw Mom standing by the neighbor’s fence.

She wore her old blue sweater, arms crossed, eyes fixed on the yard next door. I got out of the car and heard shouting from the neighbor’s yard.

Earl and Mary, a married couple, were in the middle of a heated argument. Their voices were sharp, filled with a kind of anger I knew too well.

“You’re a cheater!” Mary screamed at Earl. Her voice cut through the quiet street, sharp and full of rage.

“Mary, keep your voice down. Someone might hear us,” Earl said. His voice was low, almost pleading.

“That’s what you’re worried about, someone hearing us?!” Mary shouted. “Not the fact that you betrayed me? Not the fact that you destroyed our marriage?”

“If her family finds out—” Earl started, but Mary cut him off.

“You know what?! I’m going to tell them everything myself!” she yelled. She threw her arms up, her whole body shaking with anger. “I’m done protecting you, Earl!”

I couldn’t help but stare. I turned to Mom, who stood by the fence, watching with a strange, tight-lipped expression.

“What’s going on?” I asked.

“Looks like Earl cheated on Mary,” Mom said. Then, her face twisted, and her eyes landed on me. “What are you doing here?! I don’t want to see you or the bastard you’re carrying!” she shouted.

“I already told you, the test isn’t mine! I’m not pregnant!” I yelled back. My voice cracked, but I forced myself to stay calm. “I just need to get some things.”

“Go, but make it quick. Ugh! What a disgrace!” Mom shouted. She turned away from me, her shoulders tense.

Before I could move, Mary stormed onto our property. Her eyes were wild, her fists clenched.

“Sandra!” she yelled at Mom. “I need to talk to you about your reckless daughter!”

Mom’s hand flew to her mouth. “So it was her Earl cheated with?!” she asked Mary.

“Not just cheated! She’s pregnant!” Mary screamed. Tears streamed down her face, smudging her makeup.

“Theresa, you’ve sunk lower than I thought!” Mom screamed at me. “Getting pregnant before marriage is one kind of disgrace. But getting pregnant by a married man… You’ll burn in hell for this!”

“What?” Mary said, her brows pulling together. “What does this have to do with Theresa?”

“I’m talking about Ann!” she screamed.

“Ann?!” Mom’s voice wavered. She blinked as if trying to process what she had just heard.

“Yes! Not only did she sleep with a married man who’s almost 15 years older, but she also managed to get pregnant by him!” Mary yelled.

“No, my Ann couldn’t have,” Mom said. She shook her head, her denial a thin shield against the truth.

“Earl told me everything himself!” Mary screamed.

I watched it all with satisfaction. I kept my face straight, but inside, a part of me felt relief.

Finally, the truth had found its way out. I grabbed what I needed from the house and walked to my car, the weight on my chest a little lighter.

“Looks like your Ann isn’t so perfect after all,” I said to Mom before opening the car door. My words hung in the air, sharp and true.

“I’m sure she had her reasons!” Mom shouted after me. Her voice was desperate, clinging to the last threads of her delusion.

“Sure,” I said with a smirk. I slid into the driver’s seat and shut the door. As I drove away, I felt a sense of freedom, as if I had finally stepped out of Mom’s shadow.

Whatever reasons Ann had, all three of them—Mom, Ann, and Roger—ended up moving to another state.

Mom couldn’t handle the shame. She always cared too much about what people thought.

The whispers, stares, and judgment were too much for her. I heard they settled in a small town far away, where no one knew their story.

Peter and I bought their house. They sold it at a laughable price, eager to leave as fast as they could. That was the last time I ever saw them and I didn’t look back.
